Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and is in South Europe.

Crete is approximately 260 km long and 60 km wide. Crete consists of four prefectures: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi. Crete, with a population of approximately 650,000, is not just sun, sea and sand; it is a quite distinct place full of vitality, warmth, hospitality, culture and of course an excellent infrastructure. Crete is famous for its seas and beaches but it has a very contrasting landscape. The island goes from fertile coastal plains to rugged mountains and from busy metropolitan cities to very peaceful hillside villages.

Crete is divided in four prefectures. From west to east:

  • Chania Prefecture
  • Rethymno Prefecture
  • Heraklion Prefecture
  • Lasithi Prefecture

  • Heraklion (Iraklion) — the largest city and capital of the island, with the archaeological highlight Knossos. The harbor boasts Venetian walls and a Venetian fort.
  • Agios Nikolaos — the charming capital of Lasithi Prefecture. Once known as a partying hot-spot for northern Europeans.
  • Chania (Haniá) — At Chania Prefecture. Its Old Town is largely intact. The harbor boasts an old Venetian lighthouse and old Turkish mosque.
  • Chersonissos (Hersonissos) — very popular with tourists in the summer. While there are many "party" spots.
  • Elounda — once a small fishing town, this is now the "jet set" area of the island visited by celebrities, with many four and five-star resorts and exclusive villas.
  • Ierapetra — the southernmost city of Europe with some of the longest and finest sandy beaches on the island.
  • Rethymno — capital of Rethymnon Prefecture, The Old Town sits at the foot of a massive Venetian fortress.
